Hotels in the Kansai Region

with Easy Access to the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival

Hotels in and around the city of Kishiwada are very hard to book during the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival. If you are traveling there around that time, it is better to reserve a place on the outskirts and take a car or train to the festival. Resort hotels in the southern and western parts of Kishiwada or nearby hot spring areas are good alternatives. Or you can choose to stay at a shukubo, or temple lodgings, in Nara Prefecture. Shukubos were originally designed for monks visiting temples. Even among Japanese locals, not that many people have stayed at a shukubo. But more shukubos are open to tourists and have become a popular lodg- ing option. In fact, guests at a shukubo can enjoy different experiences than those available at hotels and ryokans ( Japanese inns), such as joining unique Buddhist activities with monks or eating shojin ryori dishes — Japanese Buddhist cuisine that stemmed from teachings that prohibit the killing of animals. A shukubo is a good option to enjoy the festival and the beautiful nature of Kishiwada.

Asukasou

An Unforgettable Experience with Kaiseki Cuisine and a View of a World-Heritage Pagoda

text by Kotarou Hori

Asukasou is in an excellent location. It is just a two-minute walk to the Kofukuji Temple, and a five-minute walk to Nara Park. Since its founding in 1938, the hotel has been serving fine kaiseki cuisine ( Japanese course-style meals). Tourists are attracted by the dishes that go well with the locally-made Japanese sake, their hospitality and the meticulous carbonate artificial hot spring, which is rare in the city of Nara. The Kofukuji Temple’s five-story pagoda, which can be viewed from various spots inside the hotel, was built in 1426 after it burned down and was rebuilt five times. This summer, the hotel started extensive conservation and repair work for the first time in 120 years in order to preserve this historic building. You can enjoy the rare appearance of the pagoda covered by the temporal roof by 2031. The view from the terrace lounge changing over time would also be special.

Amami Onsen Nanten-en

Finding Peace of Mind in the Harmony of Nature and Japanese Culture

text by Taiki Wakamatsu

Nestled in the countryside of Kawachinagano, Osaka, the Amami Onsen Nanten-en is a traditional Japanese inn built alongside the mountain streams of the Amami River. Crossing a small scarlet- red bridge, you will encounter the inn with its traditional Japanese sukiya-zukuri (traditional Japanese style of residential architecture) architecture. The inn, nationally registered as a tangible cultural property, was designed by Tatsuno Kingo, an architect known for designing Tokyo Station and the head office of the Bank of Japan in Tokyo. The traditional Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi (a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection) is incorporated into various places, and the Japanese garden that stretches over nearly two-and-a-half acres adds vibrant colors to the beauty of the inn. Another remarkable feature is the famous Kongo hotpot, which has a history of nearly 60 years, and the seasonal kai- seki (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner). Every dish they serve is a masterpiece made with carefully selected seasonal ingredients. Guests will find satisfaction in both mind and body thanks to the inn’s hospitality. It is a spot detached from the noise and bustle, a perfect destination for anybody looking for a relaxing time.

Experience Over 100 Years of History

text by Keito Hasegawa

Nara Hotel is a classic hotel that opened in 1909. It began as a guest house in the Kansai region, mainly welcoming foreign travelers and has hosted a number of famous figures. Going through the main entrance that is filled with a rich, profound atmosphere, you will find a soaring coffered ceiling over nine meters high. The space resembles an art museum, displaying objects like a torii-gate and mantelpiece that symbolize the blending of Japanese and Western culture, as well as a piano that was used by Albert Einstein. The hotel consists of the main building, which remains as the same wooden architecture since its beginning, as well as the new building, which was built in the 1980’s. The main building is recommended for those who want to enjoy a more classic style. You can feel the historical significance of every feature, such as the lighting hanging from the high ceiling and the Japanese paintings placed on the walls. This hotel is perfect for creating cherished moments with your loved one.

Koyasan Sanadabo Rengejoin

Embracing the Buddhist Worldview

text by Ryo Usui

Rengejoin was opened over 800 years ago in the early years of the Kamakura period. It is a temple said to be where Yukimura Sanada, the samurai warrior who lost the battle of Sekigahara, took tem- porary residence. Going through the temple gate, where a lantern with the Sanada clan’s family crest hangs, there appears a mystical karesansui-style garden (dry landscape garden) with raked gravel waves. Kiriku, the Sanskrit word for Amida Buddha, one of the central deities in Buddhism, is written on the gravel. The gravel, together with the dry landscape, represents Buddhist worldviews and cosmology, as well as the state of enlightenment. In the tradi- tional architecture surrounded by nature and the tranquil space of the garden with “Kiriku” marked on the gravel, one can spend time to attain a fine and rich state of calmness. It is the perfect place for those wanting to clear away the daily stress and distractions and relax through self-discipline.

What we love

• A mystical and cosmological space rendered by the Kiriku garden • Visitors can view the historically significant temple treasures of the Sanada Clan • Experience the Buddhist training practices only at shukubos, such as ajikan meditation and sutra writing ● “キリク” の庭園が表す宇宙的神秘の空間 ● 真田家ゆかりの歴史的な寺宝を見ることができる ● 阿字観や写経など宿
